The starfish story is a very beloved tale for us at the Literacy Council. Though we know that there is a great need for our services in the area, we realize that we have become under-utilized. A short time ago, we had very few students and even fewer tutors but we are very determined to make the council reach its full potential.
We began to examine and reassess our approach and we have been adjusting as we go. We have slowly gained students and tutors, and we have become more deeply involved in the community which we serve.
It can be disheartening at times when you know there are people in need of your help but you can't seem to reach them. The starfish story is a sweet reminder that if we can help just one student, we have done our jobs. If one person can become employed, become a citizen, or simply go into the world with increased knowledge and confidence then we have done our jobs. Here at the Literacy Council we are passionate about improving lives through literacy, and we will continue to make a difference, no matter how small.
If you would like to make a difference too please reach out to us, we would love to hear from you!
Hello dear readers, welcome back to our blog for literacy. It seems as if Fort Smith had a frenzy of events in the past weeks and more upcoming. Don't let our important events slip through the cracks, make sure you like and follow our facebook page to stay updated. If you're reading this tonight, it's not too late! You can still get Panera for dinner and a portion of your purchase will go towards the Literacy Council!
We are pleased to say a few new students have found us and started lessons and we hope that enrollment continues to increase. We persistently find new ways to raise awareness among the community. As long as there are people in need of our services we will do our best to reach out to them.
Lastly we are still in need of volunteers, and not just tutors. We can find a position for anyone willing to help. If you feel you have talents we could utilize in our mission to become bigger and better don't hesitate to contact us!
The Literacy Council is is jumping right into a busy spring season and we have so much going on in the community! We are collaborating with Fort Smith Little Theater for their production of "Calendar Girls" on April 10th. You can buy your tickets at the council building for $12 and the proceeds will benefit the Literacy Council. We have also joined forces with Panera Bread for a fundraiser on April 5th, from 4-8 pm. Anyone with our flyer/coupon code will be able to donate 20% of their purchase to the Literacy Council. We want to give a special shout-out to those in the community who have worked with us to create these events, they are what holds our organization together. Events like these help us engage in the community and increase awareness of our mission, giving us more opportunities to provide our services to those in need. So thank you, to all who have helped organized these events and to those who plan to attend, thank you for contributing to our community.
It feels like Fort Smith has been under a cloud for weeks now, but things are starting to pick up here at the council and we aren't letting the weather get us down. We are happy to say more and more people are coming in interested in tutoring. Our Americorps members are gearing up for Americorps Week in early March, along with their regular tutoring they will be raising funds to fight hunger in our community. We have two events coming up shortly, our open house is this weekend, (March 3rd) and we are spreading the word as far and fast as we can. We also have a naturalization info session approaching in mid March, which will be a great opportunity to find out about the naturalization process and how we can help. Like and follow our Facebook page to stay updated about future events and announcements!
Things are changing rapidly here at the Literacy Council and we are so excited! Heather Edwards recently took over as our new Executive Director and has been doing wonderfully in her new position. Everyone here at the council has been working tirelessly to revamp and re-energize! We are pleased to announce we will be featured on Channel 5 news in the coming days and we also have an open house event coming up on Saturday March 3rd from 12:00 to 3:00. The open house is a great opportunity for the people of Fort Smith to meet our staff and learn more about our services. We hope to see many new faces so we can continue to spread awareness about what we have to offer to our community.
